photo from http://www.wodfriends.org/Rode with Joe from Columbia Pike and Courthouse Rd., down Walter Reed Dr., and to the 4 Mile Run Trail. Went from there to the W&OD Trail, and along the trail all the way to Vienna, VA and back. The trail was not too crowded, since it was raining a little, and we started pretty early. We are not in exactly tip top riding shape yet, so it took us about 2.5 hours to complete the workout. We stopped a time or two to rest. Vienna is a beautiful city with a very nice square for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and others to rest, enjoy the fountain, and look at the flowers before starting their workout up again. Walter Reed Dr. above 4 Mile Run is really steep, but we managed to climb it without having to get off and push the bikes.
Joe says he may not be speaking to me after this, but I am sure he will be rarin' to go on another ride next weekend. Maybe not 25.84 miles (42 kilometers) but maybe a nice 15 mile ride or so.
The Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail is very well-developed, scenic, green, and with great amenities. There is a support organization to help keep it that way. Check out Friends of the W&OD link below. The trail used to be the W&OD rail line. Explore Paul McCray's website below at geocities to read the history of the W&OD and see great photos like the one below by Paul Dolkos showing what the trail used to look like years ago when still in use by trains.
